We had the contractors start the parade - looking at the layout of the kitchen and the cabinet construction, the overall construction of the house and the kitchen in particular. The bids came in - slowly at first and then in a deluge. The prices were astounding. This was in the early 1980's and the low bid was $12,000, and that was for a new sink, paint and "new cabinet facings" (new doors on the existing cabinets!) Now the house was not inexpensive, but these prices were out of sight! Times were much like today, many people out of work and contracts were few and far between.
Another annoying factor can be light. This is to many of you who live in apartments that do not receive any shed of natural light, simply add more electrical lights. These lights should be able to make the kitchen feel much brighter. However they do not have to be always on the ceiling, instead they could be above the stove and near a couple of cupboards that do not really receive much light. As a general rule, I would not have any more than 3 separate switches for lightbulbs, this is for other people that may use the kitchen.
Many new homeowners I've talked to think of home improvement to be a daunting task. True, it can be for those who attempt to completely renovate their entire home at once. They are often faced with a number of different problems all at once dealing with having to move furniture and other items out of the way so the renovation can take place. For smart homeowner, a kitchen redesign is easier since they choose to only do a little bit at a time. Completing each project, such as adding soapstone stoves or a soapstone counter, one project at a time avoids many of the everyday hassles and interruptions of daily life.
One other big mistake that we will focus on is not enough light in the kitchen. Appropriate lighting for your kitchen workspaces would include halogen or fluorescent lighting. Not enough light in the kitchen will make it difficult to do your daily tasks. Kitchen interior designers insist that proper ventilation be added to ensure that offending odors and excess heat is removed from the home. Many do it yourself kitchen re-modelers neglect this important aspect of kitchen design.
In a small kitchen colour can be very important, this is because bright colours can make your kitchen seem much larger than it truly is. However having a single shade of colour can easily ruin the kitchen. This is because the kitchen needs to fit the rest of the home, and if your home gives and antique feeling then the kitchen should to. What I would do is, add a bit of patterns to your kitchen walls and make it match with the rest of the house. Remember the kitchen is the heart of the home so it should also match the exterior.
