There were many famous artists that were educated or taught at the school. In addition to Gropius, there were Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbussier. Besides being visionary architects, these men also designed furniture for their buildings, in the tradition of the Adam brothers of 18th century England. One chair in particular was to change the course of furniture design to this day.
One trend that started in interior furniture during this time was the 'matched look'. Every piece of furniture in a room had to be matching and well coordinated. This is the time when the furniture sets for different rooms came into vogue. The sets were mostly in wood that was bright and light and the look adopted was modern and sleek. Buying a bedroom set that was readily adopted by other previously purchased furniture became a hot favorite for people buying new homes. The sets usually included a double bed, two night tables on either side and/or a dressing table that was pre-fitted with a mirror.
Before you decide which style is right for you, let's look back at the history of interior design. Let's make an emotional connection or at least an interest in a particular style. They say everyone has a story to tell and so does interior design. Interior design began in the stone age when cavemen began to draw pictures on their interior walls, each person telling their own story. Ancient Egypt and Rome had a deep interest in their interiors as well, especially in architectural design.
